Health advice
Visit your GP at least 6-8 weeks before departure to ensure you are up to date with any necessary vaccinations.
Tap water is generally unsuitable to drink across Africa. Bring refillable bottles, to reduce your cost and create less waste along the way.
There could be Malaria in some places – your GP or travel clinic will be able to advise on the best anti-malarial medication to take for each region.
In the evening wear long sleeves, trousers and insect repellent to prevent insect bites, and use mosquito nets where provided.
Bring a small medical kit, with some basic needs for emergencies.
Travel advice
Apply for your visa a month or so in advance to make sure it arrives in time.
Take out travel insurance. Select a policy that covers cancellation, medical illness, emergency evacuation and associated hospital treatments.
Make sure you take cash out before you get there, or at the airport, for taxis or tips for the staff.
Light aircraft safari flights have strict 15 kg (33 lb) baggage weight limits. Take a small, soft lightweight suitcase.
When it comes to domestic transport you can go by road or air. You can charter small planes or go with scheduled small flights.
Arrive 15/30 minutes before a flight departs as these smaller planes can leave without you.
Don’t expect to leave or arrive on time – things run on Africa time!
Packing Tips
Pack beige or dusty green safari clothes to blend into your surroundings.
Make sure you pack a good pair of binoculars so you can see the animals up close.
A torch is often very useful for night game drives but also for getting around the camp.
Any time of the year, don’t forget warm clothes for early morning game drives and the evenings can get quite cold.
Packing earplugs might help you sleep as the animals can be quite loud at night.
Bring a camera if you have one and don't forget the right kind of travel adaptors so you can charge your camera battery.
A battery pack can be useful if you want to charge things on the move or if there are any problems with the electricity when you are there.
